In recent times, what was once a relatively small suburb was extended to incorporate parts of neighboring Chadstone. Based on its easterly proximity to Malvern, the expansion and redefinition of Malvern East was driven in the 1990s by resident groups eager to ‘reclaim’ their address from being identified with the Chadstone Shopping Centre, which had been massively expanded since its original construction. However, the Chadstone Shopping Centre shares the ‘Malvern East’ address and postcode.
Malvern East is a well-located suburb in Melbourne’s south-east approximately 10km from the central business district. There are brilliant parks (such as Central Park, Hedgeley Dene and Gardiner’s Creek Trail).
Public primary schools are highly regarded (such as Malvern Primary School – which is located in Malvern East address – and Lloyd Street) and also access to top private schools such as Korowa, Sacre Coeur, Caulfield Grammar, St Mary’s (primary only) and De La Salle (nearby, in Malvern).
The vibe is a bit more “down to earth” than nearby Malvern, Armadale and Toorak. Most streets are well-presented with a mix of traditional and new homes. The Gascoigne Estate to the eastern extent is very much sought after for its heritage-listed Federation homes (most dating to the 1880s) on generous allotments. There are good public transport links with train stations at Caulfield, Carnegie, Darling, Malvern East and Holmesglen servicing the area.
For shopping, Chadstone is the largest centre in the Southern Hemisphere. There is also a good mix at Koornang Road, Carnegie (just to the other side of Dandenong Road) – including Woolworths, Aldi, Coles, Spotlight and a variety of restaurants and small shops. In the other direction, Malvern Central and Glenferrie Road are within a short drive. Malvern East is also very close to the “demographic centre” of Melbourne because there is greater population in the south-east than in the west.
