Blackburn Facts and Figures
Blackburn is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) east of Melbourne’s Central Business District, located within the City of Whitehorselocal government area. Blackburn recorded a population of 14,478 at the 2021 census. The origin of the name Blackburn is not certain, but may have been after an early settler or James Blackburn, who designed Yan Yean Reservoir. It lies within the City of Whitehorse, in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Blackburn is bounded in the west by Middleborough Road, in the north by Springfield Road, in the east by an irregular line along streets to the east of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary – known as the Bellbird area – and in the south by Canterbury Road.
Blackburn is home to a diverse range of property styles from modern houses and apartments, to Californian Bungalows and mid-century brick and weatherboard style residences. Getting around in Blackburn is easy, with a variety of public transport options. There are two railway stations, Laburnum and Blackburn – which are on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines and buses connect Blackburn to Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre which features all the major supermarkets, speciality stores, cafes, Zone Bowling and a Hoyts Cinema.
Blackburn enjoys an abundance of parks and reserves, including Blacks Walk Reserve, a great place for a relaxed walk or a jog or for a bike ride. Black’s reserve starts at Blackburn Road you can make your way through adjacent parklands from there or to the Blackburn Lake. Blackburn Lake Sanctuary – one of the few significant remaining natural bush-land reserves in Melbourne with high-quality indigenous bush-land, lake and wetlands. There are extensive walking-tracks, a Visitor Centre and a playground for the kids. Kalang Park – the trail to Kalang Park starts from Main Street in Blackburn.
There’s a wonderful walking track where you can enjoy the wildlife and Gardiner’s Creek – it’s a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of suburbia. Local residents enjoy walking the dog, but dogs must be kept on leash given all the beautiful wildlife in the area.
There’s an also oval ideal for sports and activities. Furness Park – Another great place to enjoy a walk by the Creek and immerse yourself in the great outdoors. Cootamundra Walk Playground is a great play area for confident climbers, there’s also a picnic area, set of swings and slides.
At Morton Park there are football and cricket ovals but also a playground at the eastern end as well as a bike park. Elmhurst Basin – with expansive areas for the kids to run and play and a playground – there’s plenty of room to sit and enjoy a picnic with the family.
